A one-meter rise in sea levels could affect 7,000 square kilometers of land and displace 1.8 million people across 2,490 barangays. A three-meter rise would impact over 15,000 square kilometers and displace 3.4 million people across 5,387 barangays.
“Sea level rise also impacts natural systems, leading to mangrove degradation, coral bleaching, and saltwater intrusion,” the study points out.
The scale of potential impacts highlights the urgent need to address and mitigate risks associated with sea level rise. The NAP report concludes, “Climate change, driven by factors such as ocean warming and ice sheet melting, is the primary cause of this phenomenon.”
